No political discussion in this topic. That is complaining about a country, a politician, a party and/or its voters, etc

The problem is we have a dumb generation brought up on fake news etc via social media. They will only realise that something serious is going on when people they know die, by which time it will be too late.

I’m sorry the generation acting the most dumb is not the ‘social media generation’. Bingo halls were still full of pensioners this week. Pubs full of drinkers last night. Supermarket queues every morning of 40 somethings.

It’s every generation, and it’s due to half arsed govt interventions until yesterday, and we are now too little too late.

no time for divisive bullshit at the moment

To clarify, you maintain that climate change is a hoax, correct?

The chancellor was good yesterday and the things he did are necessary but does it mean we will probably have more austerity to pay for it afterwards?

More likely tax rises than spending cuts I'd have thought. There is also the other option of using the printing press to pay for it, the BoE 'conveniently' already committed to another £200bn of QE 'for market liquidity', so we all pay for it through inflation.

Does anyone know what the self employed are eligible to get?....all I can see is if you've got the disease you might get a little bit each week.  My work has come to a standstill and I don't see any help coming my way....thanks.

From what I can work out it’s just statutory sick pay right now. Which ain’t great. There’s pressure on the govt to do more for this group.

Holding government to account is one thing, but opinionated celebrity journalists pushing their own agenda for clicks is another.

Can't disagree about the celebrity journalists and those pushing blatant clickbait - but at the same time I do think we need more Paxman-style grillings for the sake of accountability.

I mean they're obviously not gonna face much recrimination. But to say the worldwide spread is not China's responsibility is madness. To excuse them that is the same mentality that means people still go out and about because they feel they're only responsible for their own risk rather than the role they play in the transmission chain. 'Not my fault you didn't wash your hands after coming into contact with me'

To be honest I wish they would face recrimination because they have played a key part in unleashing this catastrophe on their own people. And lots of recrimination, too.

However, what I don't want to see is people solely pointing the finger at the Chinese and thus conveniently overlooking what role other governments played in allowing this to take hold on their patches, too. There should be accountability across the board.

There's going to be huge repercussions of this - hopefully there will be a bigger appetite for an improved and more socialised healthcare system in the US for starters. But I do hope governments start holding China properly accountable for issues that they are massively responsible for - human and animal rights violations, ivory trade, emissions and climate change.

If China is to be held accountable for those things - and they should be,absolutely - then the US, Russia, Brazil and India, among others, need to be held accountable too for the same reasons.

Sadly, there will never be an authority with the power to do so while the leading nation states hold so much power of their own.

As a freelance, with no work/money for potentially months, I might be able to claim for something.

However, I may not get a penny because I have savings - imagine being punished for being sensible and not pizzing money up the wall !!

Wonder if the Job Centres are all closed, and what would happen to the job-seekets who to sign-on daily?

Surely not get sanctioned?

I got made redundant beginning of Feb and my 'work coach' rang me yesterday saying I wouldn't have to go for 3 months and payments would automatically be paid.
I asked her if she was working at home and she said she wasn't, surprised me because I couldn't see the point of her being there but perhaps she still has to see new jobless people.

On the radio yesterday, it was announced that all face to face appointments are cancelled for at least 3 months.

I need to read up on it but I thought there was mention of removing the earnings threshold so that self employed could qualify easier for Universal Credits.

Whatever the case, there seems to be room for some help for the self employed, so don't give up hope just yet!

Just heard the British public have bought and stockpiled £1 billion worth of food in the last 3 weeks.

It's round about now that they start realising that all the fruit, veg and milk that they've stockpiled is starting to go off.

I think it's difficult for people to work from home who need access to sensitive information, as there's extra security barriers to get past.

Always been like that, when I was made redundant I didn't get a penny not even what was called the statutory payment and I even had to pay my NI out of my savings. I think they've changed that now though.

Like I said in my earlier post, you can leave the house. You can visit a shop. There's barely any supermarket delivery slots left, if you never go out, you'll starve. Just take sensible measures, wash your hands, use contactless payments if possible. If you see someone coughing, run.

It was OK to be fair. Most places still open but with skeleton staff. Still a LOT of older people out though.
