I remember debut , strolled up to corner clapping fans , sat right next to flag. The familiar set up. Then scuffed his kick. Nothing changed. What the flying is he doing in training. Needs to simplify what he’s doing same with free kicks.

...he does put a lot of effort in when he is taking corners.....!!!

He attempts to impart so much spin on the ball when he makes contact, I feel he will do himself a mischief one day. His body is contorted in such an unnatural way that if he persist with the way he attempts to deliver the ball, he will suffer for it in the long run.

As you have said, he needs to simplify his delivery and obviously change his technique for more accuracy and invention in order to add a new dimension to the  team.

Watching the Women's World Cup there was a player who took the corners, I think she may have been Dutch or perhaps from the USA who drove the ball into the box, no spin, in a straight line and above head height time and time again. It does not require outrageous skills to take a good corner, just good technique.

He shouldn't be written off, but what in the past 12 months warrants calling him 'one hell of a player'? 2 goals and 2 assists in the EPL, when he takes most of our set pieces, however you spin it isn't good enough.

Agree 100% how many of his free kicks or corners result in a goal, it’s about time we looked at other options, to slow to move the ball, through balls to Vardy few and far between, likes to be a show pony trying to beat all that stand in front of him.

While he plays like he dose Southgate won’t take a second look at him, to many better players about.

I'm sure I read the stat that came up in the Fulham game early in the game that he'd created 2nd most chances in the Premier League since Aug 2018.

Is it not for lack of talent/quality/performance but could it be just bad luck more of those chances he's created haven't been converted??

Not trying to be apologist for him as I think he could improve on his consistency and standard but looking at the bigger picture...

I believe often when that kind of stat comes up I think they also include set-pieces? As he takes all of ours his chance creation numbers get a big boost

Ah, that would make sense...

Maddison played his best football in a 433/4141 playing alongside Ndidi and Tielemans in the middle 3. He had Barnes, Vardy & Perez infront of him but more importantly he had Chilwell and Ricardo overlapping which gave him a lot of options when he got on the ball. He should step up his game atm but when Maddison is in full flow he's a joy to watch.

Agree with all of that. But his performance on Monday was arguably his worst ever for us. Really want to see him back to his best. Just not sure that he really fits into Brendan's beloved 343 formation, though. He can't play in a 2 in CM, so gets shifted to a wide forward role, which he is ill suited to because of his lack of pace.

Criticism is justified but some of the abuse he’s suffered on here is absolutely mind boggling, it gets personal oh so quickly on this forum.

He’ll be everyone’s best mate again after his next good display.

In the meantime, whilst he's perfecting it and I suggest that's better done in training rather than in a live match,  perhaps he could allow someone else to have a go because he doesn't appear to be getting any better!

Maddison is probably too self critical of his own performance.  I think he is overthinking it, and he needs to start playing his natural game!

It’s exactly this, instead of playing the simple, obvious pass he will always attempt to fake and then turn/pass in the other direction, even when it slows momentum and the simple pass is the better option

I thought he was really good in some cameos this season, especially when he came on away at Leeds. Done well in Europe too but his performances away at Liverpool and home to Fulham were typical of him and the team in general in 2020.

I still think he is a huge talent and will get better and more consistent, he needs to anyway on over 100k a week here. Don't think there'll be too many worries about him leaving inside the next year though and I hope he uses the England snubs as fuel to prove people wrong.

For the first time against Fulham it was as if he conceded that his set pieces were absolute dog muck and he started to let others take control. Under took a corner and he layed a short free kick to him too which is usually unheard of.

I think I'd have Madders lurking on the edge of the box if I was coaching as he'd be more of nuisance from 20-25 yards in a central position than actually taking the corners.

Fuchs and Albrighton should have been taking corners when they've been playing. Under Youri both able too.

Not sure if something that works at a much more amateur level than PL football should be something Maddison incorporates into his football routine. There's no reason to believe that such a corner taking method would work outside of women's football.

....believe me, it is a more accurate and effective delivery, more consistent than Maddison produces!!!

Not sure if you notice how Maddison delivers the ball, but the counter twisting action in order to impart spin on the ball, might be the reason why he carries a hip problem. I have seem him take corners close up and it can not be good for him to continually exert the forces on his body in this way.

Maddison needs Ndidi - I would love to see Maddison’s goal and assists stats when Ndidi is in the team with him vs when Ndidi is out.

In 2020, in the EPL, they've played together 9 times, Maddison has got 1 goal and 0 assists, that was Newcastle on New Years Day. It's frightening how that goal and the one against Man City are his only two goals in the league in a calender year, he's meant to be our attacking midfielder!

I just think it's a combination of us slightly overrating him, him being in poor form, him being injured and not being up to full fitness, as well as the team around him constantly changing.

I'm not saying it isn't accurate, I'm saying that, if it is indeed accurate at that level, more so than current techniques in wide use in PL football, there's a reason it hasn't been widely adopted. What that reason may be, I can't be sure, although I'd posit that it is likely due to defenders being much more skilled at reading the flight of the ball/being much more physical and powerful, negating any positive impact such a technique could bring.

Maddison looks to me like he can't run. I don't know whether the injury has affected him but he looks slow and cumbersome now.

That’s an interesting observation.....I noticed recently that he looked quicker than I had thought he was .....  still too ineffective over a game though ...

I think it's to do with his persona. He covers ground well enough, but he's not particularly quick. Also, he's often already decided he's going to ground when he's received the ball and the tackle is about to be made so you don't often see him in full flow actually running.

He needs to stay on his feet more. He's not going to assist or make positive forward passes (his biggest strength) when he's constantly on the floor.

He's a great talent but he needs to find some consistency or for the team to help to play to his strengths.

I genuinely would take a better corner than him though haha

I bloody love Madders and think he’s phenomenal, however, he does need to start taking games by the scruff of the neck.

If he along with Harvey Barnes want to play regular football for England they need to start doing this.

I really want to see one of them this afternoon taking on the responsibility to win the game for us.
