Not Fair We Should Be Top (return of 5 subs)

When a sub was first introduced into football it was for injuries only but they had to change it to "for any reason".

Here's Why.

The Football Association in England, which has never been an organisation that likes to rush decisions, refused to allow substitutes until the 1965-1966 season. When the idea of introducing substitutes was first brought into the British game the FA decided that they needed to keep as tight a leash on it as possible. As a consequence, they only allowed teams to have one player that could be brought on and even then it needed to be as a replacement for an injured player. That remained the case for two seasons, but it soon became clear that managers were bending the rules to their own advantage. Don Revie, the Leeds United manager at the time, was well-known for encouraging his players to feign injury in order to make a change so that he could influence the way that the game was going. Perhaps that’s why the Football Association amended the rules ahead of the 1967-1968 season to allow substitutions to be made for tactical reasons, too.

Yep...my Dad was at Wembley for the 1961 cup final when we effectively played with 10 men due to Len Chalmers being injured. He said City had looked the better team until that point

..let's  not go all xenophobic with this..!!!

Three subs is enough, perhaps they need to invest in Strength and Conditioning as no doubt the lesser clubs have sought to do this in a way to stay competitive.

Nah.....let's!!

Something has to be done about the frequency of fixtures and the way broadcasters dictate fixtures before they start changing the rules of the game. If nothing else to show good faith. The fixture schedule is ridiculous. Other than the 7 days between WBA and Burnely we've played two games a week. And once we come back after the internationals that's not going to change before we run into the hectic Christmas period. Yes it will increase the chances of injury. But it also means the team gets a day (two tops) to train and prepare for the next game. Teams NOT involved in Europe don't have that issue (which is a huge advantage). And we saw the result at the weekend where Villa just mauled Arsenal. You have a team with a week's preparation, focus and rest with that one game in mind. While the other had just played a European game three days before hand. We might be dealing with it okay for now, but it'll invariably catch up on us where the team will tire in the second half of the season. The question it strikes me is what do the FA/PL want their product to be. The argument to the five sub is simple, put out a rotated team and protect players for the games you prioritize. But that means those teams aren't putting out their best team for the other games, and this is still a competition. Five subs is the compromise.

It's well worth noting that for all the moaning Klopp and Guardiola do, they didn't even use three subs when Liverpool and Man City drew the other day. Man City used one, and Liverpool used two. How can they justify wanting extra subs when they don't even use the ones they are allowed to use? It's not about "fitness and preventing injuries", it's about so called bigger clubs being petrified that clubs like Leicester are taking their place at the top of the pyramid. They can't bully us on the pitch anymore, so they're resorting to dirty tactics.

It's about the ability to change tactics when they realise they've picked the wrong players to start and their subs bench is generally far superior to us chasing pack.

Two bites at the cherry.

Just compromise and do a 4 subs

It is part of the natural flow of a game that some players tire later in the game. Errors happen and chances come along. The more subs are allowed the less this occurs. In other words, unpredictability is reduced and this benefits the richest clubs with the deepest squads, who want to make their greater resources count, game after game.

EFL now making noises about it, I think it's inevitable that it will happen.

...if so they are pathetic!!!

All that organisation need is a backbone, why are they so afraid of the big boys, they concede here and it is a prelude to a league where they control everything. Either this is evidence of weakness, or their are remunerations to committee members, who appear to see no further than what they can walk away with, in an early retirement fund.

The EFL has an ex Liverpool dude as its Chairman, thats the explanation.

They only care about money and providing content for the broadcasters. When did we last play on a Saturday? And this goes for all the football authorities. Rainbow laces while having a world cup where it's illegal to be gay. Shift around almost every major league's fixtures to put a World Cup in a country that's human rights record is appalling and have no history of football. They don't care about players or fans.

Pretty much this.

I made the decision long ago to not watch the World Cup. Sod that. I'll go watch local league and non league during that month.

Journalists are hunting like a pack in this, argued with a few on twitter their parasites in bed with the big clubs

we know what five subs means it means its here till 2022at least. it means hoarding of players, it means a maddison going to united and playing ten minutes of their bench daniel james style every game

We know what this means and its why it must fought against for as long as possible

There have been three ****ing democratic votes on this, all ignored by the scousers untied and their mates.**** Klopp and **** his club.

On the one hand they set up a project to take our vote away. Now they want it.

**** off. Rotate your team more. Change the way you play. Think about your OWN players.

Nobody gave a toss when Wolves had a ridiculous schedule last year, did they? Nobody wanted to give them extra help. Nobody cared about their player welfare. Didn't hear them trying to force change.

I just had a massive rant about Klopp this season (still justified) and it was pointed out to me that he made Zero subs the other night as a tribute to Houlier who did the same in his last game.... just in case anyone else falls into that trap lol

He’s still a moaning bellend though...
