lgfualol Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I wonder who his first signing would be. I'm guessing someone like Downing for £15m
stripeyfox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 What happened before is irrelevant. It was 20 years ago and for those of us who were there it will never be forgotten. But there is not much room for sentiment here as far as I am concerned. Considering the list of candidates (as far as we know it), O'Neill is pretty near the top of the list.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 You'd have to be a little bit crazy to think Martin O'Neill did a bad job at Aston Villa. The jury is out, he didn't do a great job at Sunderland and the expectations are very high because of his previous record and because most expected us to really take off under Nigel, so it's not a given that his second reign is going to be popular. But if you think he's a bad manager on the back of achieving more than any other Villa manager in recent memory then there's something wrong with the way you think. Sunderland seems to be a special case too, much like Newcastle - it is clearly really difficult to establish these clubs as a permanent force in the top division, probably mainly down to the fact that the calibre of players they would need don't want to live up north. Leicester's East Midlands position and its fantastic area works a lot better for attracting players to your club for the right reasons (not just the £). Cambiasso wouldn't have touched Sunderland or Hull with a barge pole.
bovril Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Mixed feelings. On one hand I feel that this is the owners realising they've made a mistake, and their own personal support would come under pressure should they get it wrong - so they bring in someone the fans love. Very Pearce to Forest-esque. On another hand, the atmosphere against Sunderland will be incredible. Everyone will be behind him and maybe this squad does actually suit him like it did Pearson? Given the other candidates, I think I'm on the go for it camp. I'm cautious, but we could do worse, and probably will. 1/8 on SkyBet!!!! Jesus. Comparing Pearce to O'Neill is like comparing... um... something crap with something brilliant.
thybluefox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Different situations though. Pearson left on the back of a play off semi final defeat. His job - you could say - was unfinished... O'Neill guided us to top 10 finishes and three League Cup finals. But he's always said he wonders what he could have done had he stayed on with the money from Heskey, European football and the eventual move to the new stadium.
Fox92 Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 But he's always said he wonders what he could have done had he stayed on with the money from Heskey, European football and the eventual move to the new stadium. I know yeah and that could be an attraction now we have money?
lcfcsnow Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 He did a great job at Villa but he did spend a fair bit and he also turned down River Plate's offer of Radamel Falcao for £7million because they had Heskey. As I said.. We can say bye to Mahrez then, flair doesn't fit into an O'Neill side.
Mark_w Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Why does anyone want Lennon? I'd guess that he's pulling in a lot of the same nostalgic fans who want O'Neill as well as some fans who want someone young who can create a longer legacy which is what people thought they were going to get under Nigel. It'd be too risky an appointment in my eyes though.
Guest Mee-9 Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Why is everyone being negative? It'd be very interesting to see what he could do here. It's almost a completely different club to the one it was when he was here before. We now have settled owners, different ground, money in the bank and a big future ahead. Who's to say Martin O'Neill isn't the man to do that? Get behind him if he comes in. He took the club to dizzy heights, who's saying he cant do it again?
Bramhall Fox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Lennon or oneil? Dont know which one i would want! Not even close for me. Loved Lennon as a player, but no thanks as Manager. MON on the other hand - it's a big yes from me. I'm in.
lgfualol Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 As I said.. I agree, I don't think he'd like Mahrez.
Fox92 Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I agree, I don't think he'd like Mahrez. He signed Ashley Young for Villa, didn't he?

Honestly just think Sunderland are one of them clubs where nothing works. They can sign whoever they want in the summer, but they'll still be sh*t.
johnny the fox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I agree, I don't think he'd like Mahrez. ashley young..
LCFC_Oak Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I think this is the perfect appointment - NP has laid the foundations and I think MON is the perfect person to consolidate our position over the next few seasons. Nobody should be expecting a Carling Cup win and 9th place in the table in his first season, but survival should again be the aim. People are disappointed because we haven't gone for a young exciting manager, but this represents a bigger risk.... There is plenty of evidence in recent years of managers like Gourvennec, young, European managers coming to the PL and struggling. MON has experience and knows how to build a club for long term success.
benpicko Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Can somebody update me on this without having to read through every page? Is this likely to happen? Is O'Neill who the interview was with?
lcfcsnow Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I agree, I don't think he'd like Mahrez. He'll be gutted James McClean's been snapped up.
hackneyfox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I agree, I don't think he'd like Mahrez. No new manager will like every player and it's not as if Mahrez was outstanding last season.

Rusko187 Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I'm pretty sure more then 1 applicant will be interviewed, didn't Albert state that an interview will be conducted today? Seems very irresponsible to appoint the first interviewee, typically you look at everyone and then make your decision! Someone's seen him leaving an interview and some minted idiot has whacked a load of money on him getting it... This does not mean for certain he's got the role.
Staffs Fox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Are people genuinely questioning this if it goes through?? Yesterday our favourite was some bloke from the US equivalent on Nuneaton Borough and today its the return of the most successful manager in our history! I didn't want Pearson gone but MON would be awesome and someone all fans should and would get behind
MPH Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Just to entertain the idea of Lennon coming aswell.... Its possible Oniell would agree to "help out " for a year or two with the possibility of Lennon getting some experience and taking over after that time. Ok maybe it isnt very likely but this is a message forum and... yeah we all share ideas...
MrLuke Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I for one am happy with this. Also think its a relatively smart move by the owners; get in a Leicester legend to appease the fans who were outraged to see Pearson go. It's also an eye opener on how attractive a proposition we are as a football club - one successful fight against survival isn't (yet) enough to attract the big boys to the East Midlands. Hopefully the high levels of delusions of grandeur I'm spotting on here regarding the pull our club has will dissipate the moment the season starts, surely our targets this season will be very similar to the ones faced by O'Neill in his first tenure here.
coolhandfox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 We can say bye to Mahrez then, flair doesn't fit into an O'Neill side. Seemed to like Ashley Young enough at villa.............
