What if it's not global warming, just that the earth is getting gradually closer to the sun?

Nah, that's because the Sun, our wholesome yellow harbinger of energy, is slowly expanding and will eventually swell into a red giant and consume most of the inner planets of the solar system in a fiery apocalypse.

It's predicted to happen in about 50 billion years, but at this rate I'm thinking it could be as soon as October.

To clarify further, the Sun will enter its red giant phase in about 5 billion years (once it has consumed all hydrogen fuel) but its overall luminosity is increasing steadily over time and that means Earth will become uninhabitable to complex life much sooner - about 800 million years.

Christ.

That means we'll miss series 800,000,005 of Love Island. :(

It's not all doom and gloom then.

Watching the European Championship here, why are there so many swimming events? Backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, freestyle, medley etc?By way of comparision, we dont have 100m running backwards or sideways events and a combo of these at the Olympics do we?

Spot on. I've often thought this myself. Freestyle is by far the fastest stroke, so what is the point of the other 3?

There are too many track cycling events also. Half of them are nonsensical.

Anyone know why we use 0-60 as a measurement of how fast a car is?

Why not 0-100, or 0-70?

60mph seems a bit of a crap number, you’d have thought 100, or 50 or the maximum speed limit, for example.

60 miles equal 100 kilometers.

Because most roads, with the exception of Motorways and built in areas are 60 mph?

Why do our brains refer to themselves in the third person? I mean, we ARE our brains.

And now you're probably thinking about your brain, which is just your brain thinking about itself in 3rd person.

If someone is blind allof their life.

Do they dream pictures?

I swear you’ve asked this before, Cambridge.

The answer is no, but they do have auditory dreams.

Edit: It was asked in this very thread but it wasn’t you after all.

It was devised by an American motor journalist, Tom McCahill, back in 1946.

It's thought that this figure was chosen because it's a mile a minute.

Nothing at all to do with 100kmph, pure coincidence that the figures are very similar.

The kleenex mansize thing probably had less to do with that one dumb tweet and more to do with a PR person trying to stop them being viewed as wank rags.

I got slightly sunburnt on Sunday ...

Knock-on consequences:

1) People are no longer able to tell where your shorts end and your skin begins.

2) This opens up new career opportunities....
