The club obviously had already been in negotiations and had him primed. It probably happened earlier than expected (summer target) due to the abysmal recent showings and toxicity that was developing. The board perhaps also saw that players were unhappy and maybe were afraid of a rush of transfer requests in the summer. All wild speculation of course but I do not think I have ever seen us act this quickly and decisively before. Wheels must have been in motion. It does send out the right message to the doubters though. Although £6m to Celtic and pay rise for Rogers a factor as well. This will also help keep players who could have been thinking of leaving i.e. Kasper, Maquire, Madders etc, but also to attract new ones. He now has a running start for the next season as well. Yeah, I think the financial benefits to Celtic are getting overlooked. That's not a small sum for anything coming out of the SPL. There have been larger, of course - but that's a nice payoff.
