Traoré will cause better defenders the same problems this season. We'll drop more points from other positions until Evans is back imo. Nicely put. Thought he was really good without the ball, and awful with it. He’s ok as a 4th choice CB and will always do a (limited) job for us

He's filling in and is a lot better than most 4th/5th choice centre backs in this league.
Popular Post Lesta2014 Posted 15 August 2021 Popular Post Share Posted 15 August 2021 Only saw MOTD but his block was match saving, we all know his limitations on the ball, that block was class though.
Popular Post jmono84 Posted 15 August 2021 Popular Post Share Posted 15 August 2021 I don’t think his passing is usually that wayward. I’m putting it down to first game nerves/rust. He’ll do a sound job filling in.

Soyuncu has great composure and can get out of tight spots, but also has the occasional crazy moment where he gives it away. Forfana is probably best, is great at carrying the ball forward and passes well, but still has the odd brain fart. Evans is generally composed when playing around at the back, doesn't panic, but does play some awful balls forward that put is under pressure. Amartey isn't on the same level on the ball as any of these, but he's not as bad as made out and the others aren't without fault.
Claudio Fannieri Posted 15 August 2021 Share Posted 15 August 2021 He is not naturally a ball playing defender so in a team that likes to play out from the back and play a possession based style, he will be under the microscope and more at risk of making mistakes when in possession, on top that he is a back up player so is unlikely to get the run of matches that will help that improve greatly. As others have said very solid 4th/5th choice who will do a steady job for a small number of games and offers valuable squad cover

He's generally decent defensively and just needs to be told to keep it simple on the ball, rather than forcing a pass that's either not on or beyond his capability.
Hales Posted 15 August 2021 Share Posted 15 August 2021 I felt sorry for Dan, he had a bad game but it happens! First game back with a full house so it may be nerves. He is happy as a squad player filling in when needed. Players like him are invaluable for those early Cup games, injuries etc.

Not horrific.

And generally he does keep it simple. He had the second highest pass completion % yesterday (70 of 73), only bettered by Vestergaard (5 of 5). Obviously those 2 passes that nearly cost us will stick in everyone's mind.

That block was class but he also passed the ball straight to them on two occasions, one of which led to Traore being through on goal and a better finisher than him scores that. Generally I don't think he was that bad.
Popular Post tickler28 Posted 15 August 2021 Popular Post Share Posted 15 August 2021 (edited) Am I alone in thinking that big Dan gets a rough time from a section of our supporters that isn't wholly justified? Admittedly everyone's entitled to an opinion and critique but I feel that singling Amartey out as your fall guy is a little bit lame. I'll be the first to hold my hand up and admit that he is not a first pick....perhaps not even a second but whenever he pulls the shirt on I see him giving it his all and playing to the best of his abilities. You watch Ben White the other night for Arsenal whose performance for me was a 2 out of 10 and he cost £50 million. Amartey didn't even come to us with the intention of us using him as a centre back and since his DM role his filled in at right back and CB! Although he has a mistake in him he has proven to me that he's 100% committed to the cause and what other players can you get better than him that are happy to just fill in now and again? I think that's the point here Amartey fills in....might not play anymore than 20% of a season....if anyone can name a player better than him willing to do this let me know. Before everyone names old players over the age of 33 consider their wage demands (being free agents) and likelihood of injuries in aging legs Edited 15 August 2021 by tickler28
Hamilton Fox Posted 15 August 2021 Share Posted 15 August 2021 He’s a good squad player as he can play a few positions and is generally 4/5th choice in them so only needed sparingly. We couldn’t go a whole season with him playing centre back which is why vestergaard was signed straight away. Game saving block though!
mozartfox Posted 15 August 2021 Share Posted 15 August 2021 The key is for BR to tell him just keep it simple when he has the ball and do not try cutting the lines with risk passes. Let Cags and Jannick do that.

baldeagle Posted 15 August 2021 Share Posted 15 August 2021 Do find it amusing how people have picked up on a couple of his missed places passes , yep they weren’t great but quite a few players were guilty of it yesterday and not getting pulled up on it .
Apollo Posted 15 August 2021 Share Posted 15 August 2021 Amartey could have easily directly cost us at least 2 goals yesterday - likeable character but a liability at CB with the ball. Just because he got away with it doesn’t mean it can be glossed over. But to be fair the block was goal saving.

Koke Posted 15 August 2021 Share Posted 15 August 2021 If our 4 first choice defenders could play - Ricardo, Evans, Soyuncu, Justin -, we would look solid whilst Justin and Ricardo would cause havoc going forward. Until then we will have to get by with our back up defenders, and for a 4th choice CB, Amartey is doing OK.

Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 15 August 2021 Share Posted 15 August 2021 Bit of a bomb-scare a couple of times yesterday, but as has been said his passing isn’t usually that bad. It smacked more like first game of season cobwebs.

iancognito Posted 16 August 2021 Share Posted 16 August 2021 Amartey's problem is that he's always the stand-in. That itself will knock your confidence. He must've played 3 or 4 different positions or roles under 3 or 4 managers here but always had someone in front of him. Even when he got a bit of a run under Puel he had that leg break and lost his place again. . The guy will never give less than 100% but there's never going to be a time where he owns the shirt.
