Ben Chilwell

Here we are again with the "big clubs don't sell"/"we can't be a selling club" argument. What we need to be is a smart club. Selling Chilwell for £70m/£80m when we can sign a replacement for £30m is the smart choice. We can't act like a Big 6 team on less than half the revenue (see tweet).

I'd say the one big sale a year is working pretty well:

19/20 - Maguire covers the cost of Tielemans, Perez and Praet

18/19 - Mahez covers the cost of Maddison, Ricardo, Soy

17/18 - Drinkwater covers the cost of Maguire and Iheanacho

Yes, they don't all work out but show me a club where they do.

Regarding Newcastle and the Saudi takeover, that basically pushes down further in the pecking order as we won’t be able to compete with them.

John Percy is saying Leicester are insisting Ben isn't for sale and have no reason to sell 🤷‍♀️

Was the same for Harry wasn't it. The official line is he's not for sale, but if we can take the piss with the fee then we'll listen.

I just can’t believe the figures being quoted. When has he ever looked class for us? He seems to **** up most games and can’t really defend. Am I missing something here? Similar to Maguire I guess, why did Man U sign the player who wasn’t our best cb and paid £85m for him? So confused atm,

Skov is a left winger, I think he's been categorised as an LB as sometimes Hoffenheim go 352 wingbacks and he plays as LWB. But he is not the same type of player that Chilwell is at all, even though he's quite a good winger. So he's not a replacement option for Chilwell as he's more like Harvey Barnes than Chilwell!

From that list, Gosens stands out to me as a great option. Would get on well with the other Belgian lads and would be really steady and consistent. Basically the LB version of Praet, who is very well regarded for good reason by most on here. He's also been playing regularly for Atalanta in the Champions League, who have been doing their very own Leicester City impression in Serie A by taking on and beating many of the big boys. That's a top league, his team plays high pressing football and he's the right age to come in and settle right away, but also with enough years left in him to be a mainstay for several years.

The outstanding LBs in Europe are Tagalifico and Telles, but Gosens would be a very "Leicester" type of signing. Under the radar, not that well known but would probably end up fitting like a glove. Could probably get him for a fee that would be cheap for us and interesting to Atalanta too.

Oh **** off.

Absolutely 0 chance we'll get 85 million for him, but snapping their hands off at 40lol This is Englands first choice left back, an academy product and he's 23. Anything less than 60 and we've been had royally again by Chelsea, just like Kante.

’Englands first choice left back’.. mate hes fighting off the likes of Danny Rose and Ryan Bertrand not prime Ashley Cole 😂 If Chelsea would pay 60 million for someone who cant defend, beat a man and the weakest link in our starting 11 by far then good luck to them 😂

Leicester City insist Chelsea target Ben Chilwell is not for sale

JOHN PERCY JUNE 05, 2020

Leicester are ready to resist any bids for Ben Chilwell this summer and will insist that the England international is not for sale.

Chilwell is emerging as Chelsea manager Frank Lampard’s No. 1 transfer target at left-back, with the London club preparing to spend significant money despite the devastating impact on football finances from the coronavirus crisis.

Germany striker Timo Werner has already agreed to join Lampard for £53 million from RB Leipzig, as first revealed by Telegraph Sport, and Chelsea are set to make a move for Chilwell at the end of this season.

But Leicester have no plans to sell the 23 year old defender, who has four years remaining on his contract and is a regular under Brendan Rodgers and Gareth Southgate.

Though Leicester will refuse to place a valuation on Chilwell’s head, it is understood that it will require a fee to rival the £85 million which Manchester United paid last August for Harry Maguire for them to even consider doing business.

Leicester are targeting a place in next season’s Champions League under Rodgers and have proven over the last four years that they can be extremely tough negotiators on player sales.

Since winning the title in 2016, the club has received over £170 million in transfer fees from the sales of Maguire, Riyad Mahrez (£60 million to Manchester City] and N’Golo Kante (£32 million to Chelsea) alone.

Leicester’s hardball stance on Chilwell is reinforced by the fact that he has been with the club since the age of 12, has progressed through the academy and is now first choice for both club and country.

Lampard is determined to sign a left-back ahead of next season, with doubts persisting over the longevity of Marcos Alonso, but Leicester also recognise that Chilwell’s specialist position only strengthens their bargaining power.

Chilwell told Telegraph Sport earlier this week that he is fully focused on helping Leicester secure a return to European competition next season.

He said: “We all want Champions League football back at Leicester. When I came on against Atletico Madrid [in the 2016/17 quarter-final second leg] it was the best atmosphere I’ve ever played in.

“We want to get the job done now and get that top four, that’s the main thing.”

It doesn't matter who he's competing with, being Englands first choice LB pushes up your value. If you would seriously snap their hands off for 40m then I'm glad you aren't in charge of our negotiations. We got 35m for an injured Danny Drinkwater who couldn't even push his way into the England squad for Christ sake. Jude Bellingham is gonna go for about 30 million and he's only ever played for Birmingham in the Championship.

I'd imagine this will play out the same as Maguire, we're saying he's not for sale, we know how much we want and he'll only go if that value if met. I reckon it'll be 70-75 million.

Gosens was born is Germany and considers himself Dutch... besides that I’m not sure where the comparison to Praet comes from at all.

the rest I agree with!

If we get anywhere near £80 million for Chilwell then we are having their pants down.  If we are all honest, Chilwell isn't that good.  His main asset is that he is good at driving forward, his final ball needs to improve, his defending needs to improve, his crossing needs to improve, his concentration needs to improve and his passing needs to improve.  80 million lol

I don't think his concentration or defending in general is too bad, more like his positioning needs a little work. Man City where he was double teamed by Mahrez and De Bruyne for example, he just didn't know where to put himself.

When he's actively defending someone running at him, he's not poor or anything. Doesn't really misjudge the flight of balls or let players run in off behind him very often. Doesn't fly into tackles.

His dead ball crossing is delicious, but he does seem to struggle to his a cross sweetly on the move.

I don't think it'll be cheap or easy to find a direct replacement as good as him, though.

Is there a difference between selling a player who has been at the club since he was a kid and someone who is using us as a stepping stone ???

i think there is and selling the soul of the club dismantles something special that we have in the squad !!

There is definitely a difference between an academy player and a mercenary, but I also think it makes a difference whether said academy player is a fan of the club he grew up at. As far as I know Chilwell isn't a childhood Leicester fan. Selling Barnes would hurt more than selling Chilwell, even putting aside their footballing abilities.

Be nice if he did that publicly to shut this down - we don’t want it to become a distraction as we resume the season. There is much work still to do !

He's made it clear to the club im told he dont want him going anywhere. I highly doubt he would come out and say anything to that effect.

The media are great at spinning things so deflection is the norm.

I agree. It must unsettling for Ben and the rest of the team. It is literally all over all social media platforms and sky news! Im bored of hearing it everyday so if it isnt true it needs to be shut down! It is only going to intensify even more now they have made a signing already.

Simply not happening. BR has insisted we don't sell at any price.

Think I'll trust Percy on this...

i.e if exorbitant money appears, it will happen regardless.

Chilwell joining Chelsea for world record fee for a left-back confirmed then. Just like Maguire whilst I rate Chilwell, he's nowhere near worth that kind of money.

Chelsea broke the record fee spent for a goalkeeper to buy Kepa, so I can see them paying this. 25-30m would get us a more than adequate replacement so I can see this deal being done.

This is just Rudkin working his magic again and either way, LCFC win. The amount he has improved by over the years is truly insane.

I cant see him going anywhere, there are too many variables such as home grown players for next seasons champions league as well as lack in depth in those areas.  Finding a replacement which fits his criteria and as an attacking wing back for his calibre isnt gonna happen so it's understandable that BR has put his foot down over this. Its the clubs needs over money.

They aren't a natural progression any more from us in my opinion. There are only 2 clubs in the Prem that can further better us and they are Liverpool and Man City. We have been better all year, have a better manager and sooner rather than later a better training ground. They can FOAD as Nigel once said.
