Either that, or it isn’t a narrative

Leicester closing in on signing Roma winger Cengiz Under for £24.6m

  • 23-year-old would join on loan with obligation to buy
  • Leicester had offer for Barcelona’s Trincão turned down

Leicester are hoping to conclude a deal to sign the Roma winger Cengiz Under on an initial loan with an obligation to buy for €27m (£24.6m) at the end of the season.

Roma are open to letting the Turkey international leave because the 23-year-old with huge potential has failed to nail down a regular starting place.

Under joined Roma from Istanbul Basaksehir in 2017 and has 17 goals in 88 appearances in all competitions for the Giallorosso. He has 21 caps, having made his international debut in 2016. Although left-footed he often plays on the right wing.

Leicester had been interested in Barcelona’s Portuguese forward Francisco Trincão but had a €40m offer rebuffed a few weeks ago. The Leicester manager, Brendan Rodgers, is keen to strengthen his attacking options and a deal for Under is close.

Under has been offered a contract until 2025 and personal terms are not an issue. The clubs are in advanced talks and, barring late, unforeseen problems, Under should join Leicester in the coming week.

Double Turkish delight on the cards!

The signing is a gamble, but I think it's worth taking and it feels like the sort of signing we should be making. An attacking player with a lot of promise who is young and wants to get their career back on track. We could have signed better players, but I'd be far from disappointed with another Turkish international in the squad!

Better get to work. Caglar will be waiting at the airport.

Hopefully he replaces Perez and starts on the RW. We’ve been crying out for a proper winger, let’s hope he hits the ground running and adds another threat so the oppos defence is stretched. We’re too easy to defend against at times as we don’t really create a lot via the wings. This will now gives us a threat down both flanks as well as our dangerous passing game.

I guess the signing of Under hints strongly at us going back to 4-1-4-1 as our stock formation which is a good thing IMO.

Our best performances have come with that formation for sure.

With so many games this season we need options regardless. Last December we played West Ham away featuring a team with Mendy, Hamza, Gray, Nacho and Perez all in the starting lineup and won comfortably. That's the next step in our trajectory as a club now, we need to be winning the majority of "winnable" games regardless of who is used in our squad, and regardless of the system we use. So the 5 players mentioned above will all be useful across the course of the season. Mendy already proved it against WBA.

It will be interesting to see if Gray stays or goes as though he's not good as a starter, for cup games and as an impact option he can be useful. Getting rid of players from last season's 25 without replacing them is probably the worst thing we can do right now!

Under probably goes right into the starting 11, but I expect to see plenty of Albrighton and Perez (and Gray?) in that position over the course of the season too.
