I want us to win. I want us to do well at a tournament for a change. To dazzle a bit, like some of these players do in the league.  I find Southgate quite likeable and our team has shown some progress from youth level up in recent years.

 

For once, we came into this tournament with mostly realistic expectations.

 

Then people started saying "its coming home" after beating two mediocre opponents.

 

Then today's Sun did the Kane picture and the Colombian stereotypes.

 

This kind of thing is just massive, massive Hubris, waiting for Nemesis to take a run up and kick us right in the pods.

 

The fact that the game is on ITV (we never win on ITV) means, I regret, that tonight will not end well.

 

I hope I'm wrong.

The way this game goes I think will be decided by how Colombia approach the game. If they consider themselves underdogs then they could approach it like Russia and Denmark sit back and keep it tight and hope they get something from a mistake or lapse in concentration. Or they take the Japan and Mexico approach and try and get at us from the start pressing and chasing from the front. I think both approaches would be effective against our back 3.

 

If they don’t consider themselves underdogs then they will just play their natural game, which is probably best for us.

They have trained with a defensive set-up and formation. 

Colombia for their great football, this current generation have failed to beat an 'elite' team, there's some big similarities with ourselves in that regard.

Very true. That's then something of an indictment on the hubris of the people buying those papers, I think.

As an aside, you usually need to win at least one game in extra time or penalties en route to winning the World Cup. It's quite rare a team breezes through to a world cup final.
