I live in Glasgow and was speaking to a Celtic fan today.  Very reasonable (despite the embarrassing Foxestalk general view of Scotland).  He said he fully understands why BR left and spoke of him very highly.  Was a bit annoyed at the timing but no bitterness.  He reckons McGregor and Tierney are both class acts but no one else worth it and said "I hope he takes Sinclair with him".  He also spoke very highly of Morelos.  He reckons BR should do well but says he is a little stubborn sometimes.  X

Have been looking at this forum with interest over the last couple of weeks as I'm a Celtic fan and wanted to gauge how Rodgers would be received.

I have no axe to grind with Leicester although I must say there's a bitter taste in the mouth with Rodgers directly, not because he left, but how he left and how his actions were very different to what he professed.

Anyhow all that aside and leaving personal feelings out of I've seen a lot of playground stuff on this thread, my Dad is bigger than yours type stuff among Leicester and Celtic fans so thought I'd give an honest appraisal of Rodgers during his time at Celtic as a feeler of what's in store for you.

The guy is a top class coach, one of the very best, of that there is no doubt, what you will most definitely get with him is he'll bring on the players you already have, particularly the younger ones leaps and bounds, he's done that ad infinitum with our squad.

The flip-side of that would be his identification and acquisition of new players to come in and enhance the squad.  He falls pretty short here in my opinion in that most of the signings he's made in his time here have been poor bar 2 or 3.  The side he has left us with is undoubtedly better than the one he inherited but that is 99% down to his ability as a coach in developing players, not his transfer business, as the majority of the side was players he inherited.  His record in this regard was also poor at Liverpool, particularly when he had the Suarez money so I'd beware on this front.  This makes it even more critical he doesn't bring his charlatan of a crony Congerton with him who is a disaster.  I get the impression if you could keep Rodgers on a leash in terms of transfers under a good DOF/HOR this may be less of a risk.

In terms of his style/philosophy it is great to watch when it works and I've witnessed some excellent performances and very memorable moments during his two and a half years.  The other side of this is that he's very stubborn in his philosophy and sometimes to his detriment.  For example in Europe he insisted on playing the elite sides at their own game and we got a sore face more than once and we ended up with record home and away defeats under him.  I get the argument that we can't compete with these teams but we've had managers in recent times who have had a lot less to spend and performed a whole lot better in Europe.  All in all his record in Europe with us was pretty poor, as it was with Liverpool.  The reason I say this you may end up on the receiving end of a few doings off the big boys at home and abroad due to his stubborness in this regard as he insists on playing too expansively against teams who are a lot stronger.

Off the field he was like a breath of fresh air initially, however as time goes on you get the feeling he says too much and as such contradicts himself which lands him in trouble with the media and fans and he doesn't like then being questioned on it.  I think a large part of this is that he undoubtedly has a bit of an ego and feels he can just say what he likes at times, prepare for a lot of cliches and quotes in that regard lol!

One thing I'm going to find interesting watching from afar is that I've read one of the reasons Puel was bagged was the slow build up play and not getting the ball forward quickly enough to play to Vardy's strengths.  I'm not sure how true a reflection that is but if true Rodgers style isn't too much different, prepare for a lot of sidweays passing and backwards passing at times when things aren't clicking 100%.  He also seems to like big physical, mobile strikers who play well with their back to goal (e.g. Dembele) so will be interested to see how he uses/fits in Vardy.

As said no agenda tried to give an honest and balanced  opinion based on watching his team week in week out for 2.5 years.  If everything works out it will go brilliantly and you'll be watching great football every week, I get the feeling however if it doesn't there'll be no middle ground.

So what you're saying is we've swapped a stubborn, possession based manager who struggled to implement Vardy but was good in the transfer market for a stubborn, possession based manager who may struggle to implement Vardy and is poor in the transfer market.

Thanks lol

Our fans are comfortably, along with Everton, the least patient in the league. Any time we spend more than 20 seconds with the ball ‘FORWARDS!!!!!’

‘Just ****in punt it in the channel to vardy’ was a line heard at Watford. Painful.

The groans at the KP every time there’s a backward pass are toxic. People need to zip it or support the team.

Disagree, our football has been so poor because we play so many negative passes (and sometimes negative passes are sideways, not just backwards) and anyone with a brain cell can see that.

Moving the ball quickly and getting it forward before the opposition can get organised is vitally important in the English game and 9 times out of 10 a backwards pass negates this so I'm going to have to disagree with Brendan there.

He has said plenty of encouraging things in his interviews so far about being more agrressive, getting players around Vardy, getting more numbers forward and scoring more goals, so hopefully his comment is more an overreaction to the understandable impatience from the fans who have had to watch negative football for so long.

There were far too many negative passes against Watford and we suffered because of it. We will obviously need to change this if we are to become an effective and entertaining side no matter what is said in press conferences.

Maybe sometimes people should realise that fans are frustrated about the team making the same mistakes constantly and aren't just moaning for the sake of it. There is plenty of logic and statistics to support some of the groans.

And if the manager isn't going to give the players a kick up the backside, then the fans need to. Slow football isn't acceptable.

Well yea, that's not how football works. While too many sideways/backward passes slow the game and are detrimental to create a scoring chance, you just can't lump it forward all the time, especially when the opponent sits deep.

Anyone with a brain cell can see that.

One thing that grates me is that some fans seem to think this. They’d rather see us punt it forward than keep the ball and try and force an opening somewhere else.

You mean them old stinky fans in the West Stand dont understand football? Well i never

Thanks for the honest assessment. Much appreciated. I think it's rather fair and balanced.

I'd like to point out two things:

The transfer difficulty argument is a bit nought, when you look at the money available to Celtic and the budget we have (or are likely to be having in the summer). We are indeed working on different levels, I can see why Rodgers feels as if he could achieve more here potentially in the future, as he's very likely to be given more opportunities in bringing new players in. As far as I can tell, you can't just pin down his transfer market failures at Celtic on Rodgers alone, the Celtic board was also influential in blocking incoming transfers due to budget restrictions.

It's only logical that you're then faced with compromises and/or cheaper options, which in turn reflects on player/team performances.

At Leicester, he'll be in close contact with our DoF Jon Rudkin, and it's unlikely Rodgers will be able to decide on transfers on his own, in particular given our recent transfer history, which is a bit checkered. We seem to have turned the tide for now, but the money previously spent on what you could call "flops" such as Slimani, Musa, Zieler, Adrien Silva or Iheanacho is/was madness - although in the case of the latter, he's still young enough to fulfill his potential.

I have fond memories of Liverpool under Rodgers, and if he can replicate that at Leicester with Vardy emulating Suarez for instance, I'm all in.

Bravo! Couldn't have said it better myself. If there's anything that makes me angry its the ongoing propaganda that follows Brendan around about transfers.  The information we use to judge managers is anecdotal as in having no basis in fact. I loved watching him build Liverpool for the first two years and also Celtic. Watching the level of confidence of the players get higher and higher. After two weeks I can already see the signs of something special.

I was going to post something similar.

I don't really blame managers for signings as in today's game there are specialists at a club whose job it is to select. The manager doesn't have the lion's share of input.

There are exceptions for example Diabate, Ricardo and Ghezzal are obvious Puel picks but when we pick a player from a foreign league then the manager's knowledge is limited. I'd rather point the finger at Macia, good or bad, than blame or credit the manager.

All the responses to my original post are good points and valid.

Like I said if you can keep Rodgers on a leash somewhat in terms of transfers within a recruitment structure with a DOF and/or head of recruitment then I imagine you'll be fine in that regard.

I and 99.9% of Celtic fans out there place most of the blame for transfers at the door of his crony Lee Congerton, who has bloated our squad full of shite and nigh on doubled our wage bill during Rodgers' time at Celtic.

Have a slight concern that the club could be potentially victims of this, when people realise that he's Northern Irish and he's managed Celtic; in terms of LCFC potentially being sent threats to him etc from those that have done such things in the past with other individuals in the UK.
