I couldn't care less about the ethics. All the big clubs do it, if anything it makes me happy that in 2018 we can say Leicester City signed someone for their feeder club to develop, nobody can say we haven't grown under these owners!

I wonder if this is also a clever way to put extra money into OHL, say next year we come and buy him for 10 million, OHL can then use that money to push on

All this for a kid who got literally minutes playing for their first team.

Even though it will be of benefit to us, I'm not sure this sits well with me.

Not against any rules, but a little underhand!

The big teams do far worse. He would have ended up going on loan to Leuven from us anyway so we've just cut out the middle man and saved us some dosh! Good to see our owners have a ruthless streak as we need that if we want to be profitable. Maybe Sheff Wed should have just accepted our original offer. But dont get me wrong, if a big club had done this to us id be raging!

Doesn't his dad represent him though? You can understand why they'd be talking about this

I've read a bit of it as well and if I'm not mistaken Sheff Wed offered him a contract which he refused to sign as his is right. They then refused to play him in any football including U23's, U18's or whatever so basically the lad has lost a year's playing development.

I don't think Sheff Wed have much cause for complaint when they refused our £2m offer for him when he wouldn't sign a contract and then tried to stall his development by not playing him. I can see why he stuck two fingers up to Sheff Wed by moving to a foreign club and thus denying them any compensation.

I suspect he'll stay there a year and we'll buy him next summer if he's any good which he should be as he's a prolific goalscorer at all England youth levels. If he's half as good as his old man we'll have a brilliant player on our hands. 19 years old, great pedigree and 6ft 3", what's not to like?

In the Leuven thread I expressed my sympathy with Sheffield Wednesday over this. I am still sympathetic, but more to the fans than the club.

With the player being frozen out, there's no doubt that moving on is the best thing for him. And, if it's true that he was frozen out of the youth teams as well, then Wednesday have really shot themselves in the foot.

If they'd have shown some faith in him, the situation may have turned around for them and he may have signed a new contract.

The stubbornness Sheff Weds have shown is to their detriment. You look at the World Cup, where players like Musa and Dzyuba had fallen out with the Nigeria and Russia coaches respectively, but they're now both starting and scoring goals on the biggest stage for their countries.

I know it's a smaller stage, but something similar could have happened with Hirst. The club could have put it behind them, realised he's a star of the future and showed their faith in him. They didn't and now they've been screwed out of a couple of million quid they could have done with and a player who may have been able to kickstart a promotion push.

None of the reports I've read have picked up on the fact Leuven are owned by our owners and that we tried to sign him a number of times last summer. Only we know what's going on here haha.

And yet they offered him a new contract.

Remember Vardy was non league when we signed him also.

Once the pressure of trying to live up to his Dads expectations doesn't get the better of him he should be ok.

It's a smart move letting him go aboard where he'll be unknown and let him develop at his own pace.

Probably tapped up by his Toulon 2017 England buddy Elliot Moore.

One sentence that sums up 99% of every problem the world is currently facing.  Well done Foxestalk, I am proud of you. :)

Someone figured it out lol

http://the72.co.uk/106571/opinion-george-hirsts-departure-sheffield-wednesday-become-devastating-precedents-football/

One of the most protracted transfer sagas in recent Sheffield Wednesday history seemed to be over yesterday as George Hirst looks close to leaving the club.

But the team Hirst is close to signing for was a surprise to many. Instead of the likes of Everton and Manchester United who had been linked with him, it was Belgian second tier side OH Leuven. Many were perplexed until they did some digging. Their manager is former Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson and they are actually the sister club of the Foxes. Leicester of course were also linked with Hirst during the season.

It doesn’t take long to come up with a conspiracy theory. If Leicester were to sign Hirst, they would have to pay a compensation fee would could end up being fairly hefty. However because OH Leuven are a foreign team, they only have to pay a tiny fee which is barely worth bothering with. And with the links the two clubs have, it would be no shock to see Hirst head to Leicester in a year or two.

This has caused plenty of anger because it does feel like Sheffield Wednesday have been scammed. But if this move happens as expected, it could lead to a frightening precedent which could be abused By big clubs for years to come.

Pretty much every big team in the country has some links with a foreign side, some even owning them. Chelsea are very friendly with Vitesse Arnhem and Manchester United are the same with Royal Antwerp. If they sense they can get away with this sort of move, they will start doing it as well. And that leaves small clubs in such a big problem. Even teams with small budgets invest in their academies because one starlet can end up funding the team for years to come. And compensation fees for those aged under 24 are a huge protection. This stops players having all the power and forcing moves for minimal fees to big clubs when they come calling.

But if there is a loophole like this, it will be abused. Expect Grimsby Town’s new star youngster not to head to the Manchester City academy but to Girona in Spain for a while. And then the move to the big side will happen later. It’s a rule already abused by these sides to bring in top youngsters from other countries but now that’s obvious they can use it to bring in English youngsters it’s going to be a field day for them.

Whether the FA step in for this transfer now remains to be seen as some firm action here could make other teams wary of trying the same move. If it doesn’t, the name George Hirst could become as ubiquitous as the name Jean-Marc Bosman in the world of transfers.

Good post Brucey,

Not really sure what the problem is or what people have a problem about with this. If Leicester has signed him then he would have been put out on loan anyway, probably to Leuven like others have. If in a season or two he is worth it Leicester will probably have first refusal.

Its not like he’s going there for 3months and then suddenly be playing first team football here.

As for Sheffield Wednesday, they should have tried paying him well and actually playing him. And now they need to stop whining and get on with it.

They refused to play him for a year and tried to ruin his career simply because he wouldn't sign a contract with them. They deserve it.

And if they've turned down a bid of over a million as Babs says for a player now out of contract, you aren't getting that at a tribunal.

Natural that Nige should be well aware of whats going on at Wednesday, think he still lives in the area, and wouldn't be surprised if he's mates with David Hirst.

Not a conspiracy, move along please, nothing to see here.

(Great plan to use Leuven as a real feeder. Haven't the italians been doing this for years?)

Apparently we had a 2m bid turned down, that fact could have been used to argue for a higher fee approaching that at tribunal.

It isn't only the fee that Sheff Weds are losing out on, it's also the 10-15% standard sell on clause that is usually worth more.

Seems their owners have fallen out with Hirst sr, with a few of their forum ITKs implying their club is in the wrong for treating Hirst jr badly.

So we couldn't pay the petty compensation? The hierarchy are willing to jump through all these hoops to save a few bob. Very poor showing IMO. Sheffield Wednesday aren't exactly poor club but if we did this to them we probably would do it to smaller clubs further down the leagues who could do with the money.

We were willing to pay 2m for him so that's not really the case.
