Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury investigated by FA for offensive tweets

The Football Association is looking into a series of historic social media posts from Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury.

The 21-year-old posted a number of offensive tweets in 2013 and 2014, some with racial references and another in which he criticised women's football.

Choudhury has since apologised for his remarks and appears to have deactivated his Twitter account.

He said: "I've learned a lot as a person in my early years as a professional - certainly enough to know that some of the thoughtless comments I have made in the past are both hurtful and offensive.

"They do not represent my true beliefs. I'm deeply sorry to anyone I have offended - both at the time and since they've been recirculated.

"I've grown up a lot since then and learned a lot about life, but I accept that I have to take responsibility for the comments I have made in the past and will be a better, wiser person for it."

A Leicester spokesman said: "Hamza's approach to addressing the matter and the remorse he has expressed shows the maturity he has developed in the years that have passed since the comments were made.

"He now has a far greater understanding of the impact his words and behaviour can have and is committed to using that influence in the positive, respectful and accepting manner his more recent growth has demonstrated."

Choudhury, who has made 19 appearances for Leicester, will not be subject to any further disciplinary action from the club.

Don't the FA have better things to do than investigate things a 15yr old tweeted?

Surely the issue of racism in football, along with diving and implementing VAR and safe standing successfully are bigger issues to be tackling?

Am I right in thinking that Declan Rice wasn't investigated for a series of posts supporting a terrorist organisation? Bizarre if they have chosen to pursue one and not the other.

Hamza was part of the Inbetweeners generation. He was 14 at the time. Good thing twitter didn't exist when I was 14.

My Mum told me that she was once given a lecture after I pushed into the sweetie queue at playgroup, aged 2.

I hope Gooner fans don't find out about this and notify the FA after I score a hat-trick for LCFC at the Emirates next season.

When he was in his mid teens? A schoolboy? Seriously????

But then I suppose nothing should surprise us any more in this messed up, vindictive spy-and-snitch society that we have created in which the young, the old, the innocent and ignorant are unjustly investigated, shamed, demonised and sometimes destroyed by the ever more powerful and dangerous PC bulldozer.

Chin up, Hamza lad, you're one of our own, don't let the b'stards grind you down.

Seriously worrying that this is even a thing.

The completely logical consequence would have to be retroactive control of all people's social media output ever.

Good luck with that.

Find most of what Hamza wrote as a teenager absolutely harmless. Too many snowflakes out there with nothing better to do in their spare time, and even the police have caught the bug now.

Calm down people. They are just investigating. Doesn't necessarily mean they'll charge him. Probably just warn him not to do it again.

Hopefully so. Would be ridiculous otherwise.

But the FA should have enough flexibility to ignore or dismiss frivolous complaints without reportedly announcing that it will investigate them.

Otherwise, it sets a precedent: anyone with a grudge can dredge up some ancient comment by a player in their youth to get them investigated.

If they're going to do that, to make the system fair, maybe they should get staff to scroll through every social media comment ever made by every footballer at any age.....

Waste of time and unfair. It's a different matter if a mature first-team player says something stupid.

Absolutely ridiculous, the lad was a minor. Hadn't taken his GCSE's, couldn't buy a packet of fags, or vote (they limit young people doing so for a reason). Where do you draw the sodding line. They going to go through his Bebo account form when he was 9?

It's worrying that this is a thing now. What's even more worrying is the amount of people hidden behind a picture of a famous person on social media with the ability to dig out anything on you. Not that I condone what Hamza posted, of course, but take into context the times and how old he was.

Strange it's only come up now after being brought up during his performance vs. Arsenal and not 6 years ago when he was a child.

I suppose the lessons to be learned from a professional sense are 1: don't make stupid jokes online which might come across as insensitive 2: if you have done, even way back in the past, scrub your social media before you hit the big time - the only reason this was brought to attention was because some butthurt sweaty Arsenal fan couldn't stand to see his fannyman Torriera crying after getting handled by Hamza.

This is why Timehop is great. I used to write some retarded stuff on social media when I was younger and now it just pops up if it was however many years to the day - then I can just delete it.

The Arsenal fans that have waded through five years of tweets to find dirt on a 21 year old are the ones who need looking out

we all make stupid mistakes and post things we regret later in life, it's part of growing up and taking responsibility and showing you have changed and matured. people can't be held to account for every little thing they say and post.  a lot is done in the heat of the moment or taken out of context. not to mention we live in a society now which is offended by everything and anything.

If someone has made a complaint of racism the FA have to investigate, otherwise they leave

themselves wide open.

They will probably just remind him of his responsibilities.

Storm in a teacup.

Well I'm critical of women's football. It's boring and nobody cares. I find it highly annoying that Arsenal Women vs Yeovil Town Ladies will be reported on in the news, whereas a top of the table League One clash with an attendance ten times larger will not.

Bang go my chances of playing for England.

NB, I have no problem with women playing football, professionally or otherwise. It's just the agenda of promoting it in excess of any true interest in it, i.e. you WILL follow women's football.
