Playing devil's advocate, I wonder if we bought this guy as a contingency plan, a la Soyuncu, for the pending departure of Maddison? If we miss out on Europe, Maddison will likely move on. If we get Europe, then we'll need the bigger squad anyway.

With the lack of action Dennis has had so far, I was thinking this. If Maddison leaves in January or next summer, we take the 80 million and pull out a better midfielder that we had in our pocket all along, with the benefit of having a year of integration with the squad

I will predict this...Maddison will become the new Gasgoine...(not off the pitch)...and will stay longer than some expect..

We have been brilliant at future proofing, Maguire we had Soyuncu and Benkovic, and we have Choudhury and Praet for either/both Ndidi/Maddison, Barnes and Tielemans for Albrighton, Chilwell for Fuchs....point being we can sell, at profit, already have replacements, then purchase youth at the right price.....this policy has been in place for some time...credit to the owners and previous managers for buying into it.....I would be surprised if we didn’t lose one or two midfielders in January or Summer....Arsenal and United are desperate for an Ndidi......

I can almost guarantee we won't lose anyone in January.  Depending on our league finish, i'd be surprised if anyone will leave in the summer either.  One more full season with the same group, plus some quality additions could put us on the brink of something special!

I’d be surprised if we DID lose one or two. If we’re to sell one of our starlets then it won’t be done in January it will be dragged out for the next 12 months whilst we demand the highest price possible and make sure we’re equipped for when he leaves.

The players will know that as well, none of them will squeal about it. The summer might be a different matter especially if we fail to get Champions League but no one will kick off in January.

It’s a busy Wednesday morning at Belvoir Drive, where Dennis Praet has just arrived for a day’s training in attire that wouldn’t be too out of place if an invitation to a dinner party read ‘smart-casual’.

Donning a smart grey jacket and jeans, he heads into the training ground, gets changed into his Leicester City gear and has some breakfast before spending around 15 minutes discussing his time at the Club to date.

He arrived from Sampdoria in the summer, and has now played 15 games in all competitions for City, including a substitute appearance in his latest outing.

Praet came off the bench with the scoreline at 1-0 to help the Foxes secure their ninth Premier League victory of 2019/20 over Brighton & Hove Albion, and their fifth in a row in England’s top flight.

The 26-year-old made his debut in the 1-1 draw at Chelsea back in August.

“It's really nice to be part of this team,” reflected Praet to LCFC.com. “I think we're doing incredibly well at the moment, but it's early on so we will try to keep this momentum we're in and this level that we are playing at.

“In the Premier League, it can change quickly and it's a long way so it's really nice to be here with them and with a lovely group where the atmosphere is great.”

While many have been surprised with the way Leicester City have started the campaign, Praet says the belief they have showed in themselves over the past four months has carried them to where they currently sit in the Premier League rankings.

I was not a regular starter at first, but I needed to adapt to the football of the new coach, Roberto Martínez.

“I think we were really ambitious at the start of the season because we know we had a really good group of good players and so we were aiming to go as high as possible,” he continued.

“Now, we’re in second place and normally there are a lot of big teams here that mostly cover those six places, so it's difficult to get in between them.

“We should just continue this way and then believe in ourselves. That’s important and I think you can see on the pitch now that we already believing in ourselves.”

The City No.26 has made six appearances for the Belgium national team.

Praet’s tasting success on the international stage, too.

He made his sixth appearance for Belgium earlier this month, as they ended their 2020 UEFA European Championships qualifying campaign with a perfect record of 10 wins from 10 games.

With a gap of four years in between his first and second cap, Praet is hoping that next summer’s competition will provide him with an opportunity to make his first appearance at the finals of a major tournament.

He said: “I was not a regular starter at first, but I needed to adapt to the football of the new coach, Roberto Martínez. Before, the coach had 25 players that he always selected and it was difficult to get to get in it, because he was preparing for the World Cup at that moment.

“But when the World Cup was finished, I started to get in the team. From that moment on, I've been involved more. Last year, I played a little bit more.

“It's a good feeling of course because it was the first time, I think, that Belgium reached 30 points, so that's really nice and it's also a very positive group with a lot of very good players all around.

“So, now we should just continue that way to the European Championships, and we'll see what happens there.”

Upon joining the Football Club in the summer, Praet knew that the brand of football that Brendan Rodgers wishes to implement would align with his own style of play.

With a day of training ahead of him, the interview ends with him explaining his strongest attributes, and why working with Rodgers was a key factor in his decision to become a Fox.

“I'm a good passer,” Praet said. “I can keep the ball well in the team. I can be creative and from that I can also do my defensive work, like a box to box player that can take the ball at the back and then play the game.

“The style of football was very important for me. It's a theme that suits my mind – a style of football that wants to play with dominance in the game, create a lot of chances with a lot of possession and that's what Leicester is at the moment. Of course, that suits me.”

Wouldn’t mind seeing him start as a number 8 in our usual 4-1-4-1, with one of Tielemans or Maddison on the bench. 

 

Always plays well for us in the league and in my opinion, outperforms our other midfielders when he gets the chance.

Deserves to be alongside Ndidi for at least the West Ham game, Tielemans looks out of form/ knackered/ both.

Looks a good player but totally over rated on here. He’s steady. Doesn’t really have any outstanding attributes. I would start him over Tielemans for the West Ham game.

After a good start to his career here, I have been less impressed with Praet in recent games. His technical ability is not in question, neither is his work rate or ability to cope with the physical nature of the Premier League. But I think he's playing too passively in our team at the moment and though he makes nice passes he's not directing the flow of the game. Even though Tielemans is (quite rightly) getting a lot of stick recently, I still feel like even when he's playing badly he's capable of a killer through ball to open the game up completely, whereas Praet doesn't do it nearly as often.

 

I think he needs a bit more arrogance to his game. Maddison quite often does things that are a bit too arrogant / greedy like shooting from a ridiculous position from a free kick, but at the same time it's why he's got the confidence to have scored so many goals and played so many exquisite balls for us. He's good and he know's he's good, whereas Praet I think is good, but isn't sure how good he is!

 

It could become an issue for us because more and more teams are parking the bus and with a fairly heavy schedule we need to rotate Maddison, Tielemans and Praet to stay sharp. Perhaps the light at the end of the tunnel here though is that when Perez plays as a support striker / 10 he's actually done very well so that might be an option for us in some games too.

while i'd agree, i'd say it was quite harsh for him to be taken off instead of tielemans

I think people forget how many times he's been incredibly unlucky to not score in a few games now due to last ditch blocks etc.  A couple of goals next to his name and I think the opinion on him would have changed significantly. But its good that hes getting into those positions to get the chances.

I can see that viewpoint, especially in recent matches. I believe he's been signed for the build up play when we are dominant in possession against teams that park the bus. Praet is very technical and rather than just hoofing the ball, he has the technique to receive the ball in tight spaces, turn and then keep the ball going with a good pass, which is often played first time. Against teams that play a low block, notice how we spend a lot of time passing the ball from side-to-side - that's because we are trying to force their defenders to keep moving, and then at the right time, inject pace into our play to create an overload opportunity to deliver a killer ball into the box. 

 

What I would say is that in recent games he is neat and tidy on the ball, but I don't see him demanding the ball and / or grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and trying to make something happen. Maddison on the other hand has turned into that type of player which is why for me he's been one of our most important players this season.

I can't believe Tielemans was playing deeper than Praet on Wednesday, doesn't make sense. Praet is the type of midfielder to keep things ticking over but also has a bit of a box to box nature to him. Last couple of performances haven't been excellent, coming in and out of the team can't be great for him and he seems to be the one that gets dragged at half time when things aren't going well. Good teams need players like him I reckon.

I was at first highly enthused by this guy. But last few weeks he's been very very ordinary. 

 

Your analysis of him is spot on. But right now, on current form, we'd have been as well to save 20m and included Mendy instead who frankly does.much the same in receiving the ball in tight spots and swerving out of trouble.

Not sure about that ........ also I  am worried about mendy being targeted by more physical players .... strange we are playing soton tomorrow ....maybe worth looking back at last season home to them to see what I mean .....

As much as I think he's a perfectly capable footballer without being extraordinary, Mendy isn't in the same bracket as Praet. Dennis is significantly better.
