Exactly! They’ll sack him and have Kingy in charge for a month before employing RM’s twin

They still won't have considered it as a possibility lol

Should be added to the playing out from the back discussion that opponents know that even if we do get out and beyond them, the likelihood of us converting or even making a chance is slim

there’s little to dissuade them from a persistent high press

He's resorted to throwing players under the bus now. He's moved on from blaming fans. This will drag on and on

Even worse, he is empathising with fans, saying he agrees with us that they aren’t good enough, as if he has no control over it. At no point joining the dots up that he might have something to do with it. Don’t want you sympathy Russell, I just don’t want to see you managing my club anymore.

Surely if you admit you can't work with the tools provided you should be let go

I think we are a long way from sacking him, we will need to sink to the bottom first. They won't want to admit they are wrong. At least with McCarron I have some hope they will at least have something in mind for a replacement.

The forced empathy is a ploy to stymy the singing and chanting.

Problem is that shuffling the blame on will just cause more poor performances. The real tonic is honest to god accountability and change which I don't think he's going to.

Fed up of reading we can't afford to sack him. Funny how that is the case, but we always magically have the money when it comes to the latest Southampton or Ipswich washed up has been.

Also - even if this is true (big if), what a ridiculous situation to put yourselves in.

Remember how we couldn't afford to sack Rodgers. That was the excuse for so long. Well we did eventually. Maybe if we'd spent that money earlier, we'd have never gotten relegated and imploded like this in the first place.

Remember how we couldn't afford to sack Cifuentes as well? And then all of a sudden, because the idiot owner happens to be present for one of the many disgraces under him, we have the money.

Not having the money is nonsense. Not only is it not worth the trade off anyway but if this were actually true, then what absolutely terrible planning.

Here is a wild idea don’t give a manager a 3 year deal

when the last 4 have not even last one season.

Then factor in, the bloke you’re getting didn’t last a couple of months in his last job.

At this point you have to wonder if they are trying to self destruct the club.

A 3 year deal when they were bidding against precisely nobody. Like a lot of the signings as well.

Ahead of the game v Leicester in October 2024 RM said "There is a difference between being stubborn and having conviction. If you really believe in something as a coach, manager, leader, then the logic for me is that you stick with it and try to be better at it." I coy from BBC analysis

Martin must now reflect on the more telling statistic that Southampton are bottom of the Premier League with one point from eight games, conceding 18 goals, second only to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A journey through Martin’s managerial career does not offer any suggestion he will change his modus operandi, even though there must be increasing concerns around Southampton that such a poor start will be a main ingredient in a recipe for relegation.

The match report for Rangers v Hearts (RM last game but one in charge "There was little evidence of that in an opening 45 minutes full of nerves, with the disjointed hosts looking like a bunch of individuals facing a well-oiled machine rather than a cohesive unit." Of course, similar could be said for first half yesterday except Peterboro, with one win and four league goals cannot be described as a well oiled machine, yet they destroyed City.

Quoting again from BBC, after Rohl's second game in charge at Rangers but there can be no question Rohl has instilled more in a busy eight days than his predecessor Russell Martin managed in three months.

Looking at possession for previous clubs where RM has managed, this is currently more than previously;  it is regularly tat least 70% this season - he has 'doubled down' oh his core pholosphy.

He won't change. He must go (along with anyone invovled in his appointment (Presumably Top, Rudkin and McCarron).

(I did note that in the interview afterwards he largely criticised the players (of course, he did not accept any responsibility). I don't think he has been so critical before (usually claiming inexperience - or tiredness after playing 3 games in eight days).  There cannot be a happy playing squad, largely of Martin's making, standing just above relegation zone.

No club can be successful in the long term managed by someone that will not adapt tactics adequately to the situation and the players available.

He must go.

I recall reading Martin had a tough upbringing in life, and he's done well for himself.

But his "possession" football is just a lifestyle attachment, an intellectual affectation, to go with his trophy wife, nice hair, and bhuddism.

When Pep had 1 inverting fullback he went 1 better and had 2. How did that work out?🤔

He has no idea how to make it work. He can't organise a defence, nor an attack.

Enzo drummed into the players where they had to be positioned, where to run, and where to pass. There was no confusion.

Watching the team now and there is no system at all, except an ephemeral concept of possession with absolutely no idea what to do with it.

Sean Dyche wouldn't be an upgrade on him.

Sean Dyche would be night and day better than him! He is exactly what we have needed since Enzo departed. A motivator, organiser, builds a team who are really good at the basics and adaptable. He would improve this squad 10-fold within a month.

You are spot on, he is night and day compared with Enzo, who comes from a tradition of excellent Italian coaches, who drill players and have discipline and intensity. Martin brings to mind a bit of Joey Barton, when he was going through his transformation phase and starting visiting art galleries and giving interviews with The Guardian. Psychoanalysing him, it's a reaction to the harshness of his youth, understandably he wants to be as far away from that, hence the 'love for the ball' and the care for animals (veganism), the floppy hair and hipster outfit.
