And to add to this, practically the first "foreigner" to be given samurai status in Japan (in essence a form of citizenship), was black.

Another one buying into the „black samurai“ myth.

The guy was nothing but a mere servant.

Itv posted a clip of him and Dixon the other day, think it was after Bellingham scored, and you can see him immediately going to his notes to reel off his sound bites, not an ounce of spontaneity in him at all

I’d just like to apologise for the comment. In hindsight It was a silly post and I’ll endeavour going forward to not make such daft posts (I will still make daft posts)

Until tomorrow...🙄🙄🙄

Depends on which historical records you believe accurate (if any), I guess.

In any case, the OP has elaborated so I'll personally leave it there.

I like an upset as much as anyone and Japan is hard not to be fond of; but the World Cup is not quite the same with an early Brazil exit.

A team of very unlikeable players. All seem to come across as arrogant tossers.

Do people still really feel this way?

If Socrates and Romario and Jairzinho were in the team maybe. They’ve got one star and the rest of them are not much cop.

There’s been world cups where the tournament has been worse off because they shithoused past more entertaining sides; Chile, Colombia, Netherlands, Mexico off the top of my head.

They haven’t been a likeable or fun team since I was born.

You’re talking about Yasuke, and yes, he was a real African retainer of Oda Nobunaga. But saying he was practically the first foreigner given samurai status and calling that a form of citizenship is a stretch. Japan had other foreign born people involved in military/service roles, and samurai status in that period wasn’t the same as modern citizenship. Yasuke’s story is historically interesting though.

Sorry lol I do like my history to be correct on a football forum

Well I do. Mostly for the fans and the vibe they bring. Vini Jr. might be one of the best dribblers in the world and prime Neymar is special; but apart from them, their team do seem to lack the flair of old Brazilian teams.

Probably the worst Brazil squad since world cups began but unlike the last few World Cups they seem to have a bit of character and a decent manager, plus they’re well supported. Japan are a very good team so that’s a good win.

Are there any documented incidents of foreign born individuals being made samurai before him? I can't find any.

You're right about there not being a massive link between samurai status and modern citizenship, but imo it does show a level of acceptance that had apparently been granted to precious few, if any, gaijin, regardless of skin colour, before him.

The Sengoku Era is an absolutely unbelievable font of historical wonder, it's great to learn about.
