absolutely saved by his toe nail, the defender there…

He touched the ball? If so, fair play it’s not a pen, I didn’t notice a touch even on the replay, must have been very minor

edit: yeah see it now on the replay, not a pen

Thought it was a blatant pen and the replays made it look more blatant lol

Right knee of the SA player clearly catches the Canada players leg as he swings.

Madness.

How does she see that as a foul, when a) the South African wins the ball b) the Canadian kicks the South African

He doesn’t win the ball though, he gets nowhere near it. He just puts his leg where the player is already swinging it.

This is another one of of those occasions where there is no written rule or guidance so the referees can just make it up as they go along. Everything is open to interpretation.

EDIT: Looking again, he does slightly touch the ball tbf. But it’s not a ‘clean tackle’.

Is the ref's surname something like De Boer or Van Staden?

Perhaps the fair result would be an indirect free kick as the defender at least obstructs.

What is even the debate here? The South African got to the ball first??! Has everyone gone mad???

Touching the ball does not automatically mean it’s not a foul.

I’m actually unsure whether it’s a penalty, but it’s not obviously not a penalty.

...if there's so much disagreement chatter on here, then it clearly wasn't a clear cut decision either way.

I think it was a clear decision but some people just didn’t see the contact with the ball, once you see it, it’s obvious it’s not a penalty

If you are agreeing with Christina, it probably means you are wrong.

Considering she has now given two completely different opinions on the same incident, that’s most of us 😄

I'm just basing my thoughts on the opinions put forward here.

South Africa look like they are playing for penalties although Canada could have had one.

I just don't think they have the quality, let alone play for the draw. I'd be surprised if they score.
